3 Judges Suspended! Brandon Rios vs. Michael Katsidis? Alfonso Gomez may face Canelo Alvarez and More Boxing News:

3 Judges Banned! The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) indefinitely suspended 3 judges, who worked the Paul Williams-Erislandy Lara fight, on Wednesday. After a full review, the NJSACB didn't find any evidence of “bias, fraud, corruption or incapacity on the part of any of the judges.” but they still aren't satisfied with the scoring. The judges will be required to have additional training before they can return to pro boxing.

Vladimir Rodionovich Klitschko died last Wednesday – he was 64. The father of the heavyweight champs Wladimir and Vitali had lymph node cancer. He was stationed near Chernobyl during the nuclear diaster, and participated in the immediate cleanup. He is survived by his wife, his sons and 3 grandchildren.

Brandon Rois vs. Michael Katsidis? Rios remains unbeaten after his recent win against Antillon, while Katsidis is 27-4. Either way, if this fight happens, it'll be one to watch!

Alfonso Gomez vs. Canelo Alvarez set to face each other September 17th at The Staples Centre in L.A.? September 17th also being the night that Floyd Mayweather will face Victor Ortiz, and Erik Morales will fight Anthony Crolla. The fight is not official yet, but if it comes through will be Canelo's 3rd world title fight – and he just turned 21 yesterday, July 18th.

Cristobal Wins With Sloppy Performance, Paul Williams Gets Controversial Win, Brandon Rios Kills in 3rd Round, Boxing Gear, Punching Bags, Boxing Gloves, Boxing News…

Cristobal Arreola Wins Fight – but not happy with his performance... saying that he should have knocked out his opponent Friday Ahunanya, but just couldn't pull the trigger. He compared his performance to Haye, and joked that his toes were messed up. Arreola may get to fight Wladimir Klitschko before it's all said and done.

Paul Williams gets controversial win. His opponent Erislandy Lara landed more, and better, shots but the judges gave the fight to Williams. Williams got pretty beat up, and Lara had a large knot on the left side of his face. Turns out that he suffered a small facial fracture. Williams hopes to have 1 or 2 more bouts before his retirement, one of which he hopes to have a rematch against Martinez.

Brandon Rios had a quick fight on Saturday – he finished off opponent Antillon just before the end of the 3rd round of an action-packed fight. Rios knocked down Antillon twice in the 3rd round, and referee David Mendoza stopped the fight just 11 seconds before the end of the 3rd. Rios's next fight may be against Mexican champ Marco Antonio Barrera... and there is already talk of a Rios vs. Pacquiao fight, but that will be farther into the future.

I’m Going to Get That Belt, Boxing News, Brash Brandon Rios to Defend Title Against Aggresive Antillon, Cotto vs. Margarito Rematch, Ricky Hatton Retires,

Ricky Hatton Retires
The Hitman” Ricky Hatton formally retires from boxing. He will be focusing on his promotional company, Hatton Promotions, which promotes fight cards. Will he make it to the boxing hall of fame?

Andre Berto to challenge titleholder Slovenian Jan Zaveck on September 3rd. Location unknown. This will be Zaveck's 4th defense. Knockout artist Randall Bailey will fight the winner, providing he wins his undercard bout.

Cotto vs. Margarito Rematch on December 3rd. Margarito won their last bout, but was caught trying to cheat in his next fight against Shane Mosely. Arum hope to have the rematch in July, and then September, and now December due to Margarito's health issues. (After suffering a broken orbital bone Margarito also developed a large cataract from his fight with Manny Pacquiao. He was told that he couldn't box if he had surgery on his eye and seriously considered retiring – his vision was really blurry. However, an eye specialist was able to successfully do a different kind of surgery). Let the Mexican – Puerto Rican rivalry continue... I'm looking for an interesting fight.

Cotto vs. Margarito Rematch Scheduled
Paul “The Punisher” Williams returns today aftering losing to Martinez. He will fight undefeated junior middleweight fighter Erislandy Lara.

I'm going to get that belt” says Rico Ramos. The Puerto Rican-American will face WBA champ Akifumi Shimoda, also today. Since going pro in 2008, Ramos has yet to lose a fight. He's 19-0, with 10 knockouts. This could be an interesting and entertaining fight.

Brandon Rios to defends WBA lightweight title against Urbano Antillon today. The guy has a pitiful defense, but exclaims “To me, a great defense comes from having a great offense.” He can take a beating and give one right back. Plus, Antillon is a great offensive fighter. If you are looking for an exciting fight full of punches, I'd recommend this fight.

Wladimir Klitschko Easily Defeats Haye, MMA Fighter Kimbo Slice To Take Up Boxing, Boxing Gear, Thailand Boxers May Not Fight in Olympics, Boxing Equipment, More Mayweather vs. Pacquiao & More Boxing News…

Wladimir Klitschko
Wladimir Klitschko dominated Haye in the big, hyped-up fight on Saturday. Haye's talk was big, but unfortunately, he didn't deliver. However, he was sure to inform us that it was due to a hurt toe. Quick recap / news bits on the fight:
  • Haye did a bunch of falling, and finally got penalized for it.
  • Of Klitschko's last 9 fights, Haye is the second opponent to have heard the final bell – not exactly what Klitschko was hoping for.
  • Klitschko, the “boring” fighter (according to Haye), threw close to twice as many punches as Haye himself (Klitschko threw 509; 134 landed vs. Haye's 290; 72 successful).
  • This is Klitschko's 14th straight win
  • The Klitschko brothers now hold all the major heavyweight title belts
  • Both fighters were on their guard, not wanting to be knocked out.

John Murray
Mayweather will to fight Pac-Man only if there is random blood and urine testing, which Pacquiao's team is currently unwilling to do. Of course, Mayweather must fact Ortiz first... and Ortiz declares there is only one problem with Mayweather's plan to fight Pacquiao next, and that is that he will be Pacquiao's next opponent!

Thailand's boxers might miss the Olympics next year because of a election issue. The International Boxing Association (AIBA) expelled the Amateur Boxing Association of Thailand because they hadn't called new elections by the end of June. The March elections had cause for concern over whether all was fair and right.

Kevin Mitchell
John Murray vs. Kevin Mitchell postponed due to Mitchell's viral infection trouble, which cost him almost a week of training time. The fight was to take place this Saturday, July 9th, but is re-scheduled for one week later on July 16th. Mitchell wants to fight Murray when he's “fully fight fit so there are not excuses”. Way to go Mitchell!

MMA Fighter "Kimbo Slice"
MMA fighter Kimbo Slice will make his boxing debut, against an opponent-to-be-determined, on August 13th. The four-round heavyweight fight will be untelevised in Miami, Oklahoma. Kimbo, who's real name is Kevin Ferguson, is 6' 2” and 225 pounds. Put this guy in the back of your mind... we may be hearing lots more of him.

Jhonny Gonzalez got a new opponent. Gonzalez's first title defense will still be this coming Saturday, but will be against Tomas Villa in Atlantic City, N.J. He was to fight Roinet Caballero in Gurrero, Mexico but Caballero dropped out due to a visa issue.

Jermain Taylor Returning, Floyd Mayweather Sued, Haye vs. Klitschko Saga Continues, Felix Sturm Barely Keeps Title, Mayweather “Absolutely” Wants to Face Manny Pacquiao, Boxing Gear & Boxing Equipment

Jermain Taylor
Jermain Taylor Returns! After suffering a severe head injury nearly 2 years ago, he is returning with a clean bill of health. His trainer is Pat Burns, and he'll be in the 160-pound middleweight division. He might be fighting August 13th.

Floyd Mayweather sued. 21-year-old Anthony Cliff, of Las Vegas, claims that Mayweather had his bodyguards attack him after asking about a match against Pacquiao. He's being charged with assault and battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress as well as negligent hiring, training, supervision and retention of employees. However, this all happened on March 27, 2010. Why didn't this guy press charges sooner? What next?

I will absolutely destroy him” says David Haye. Once again, David Haye is full of words... saying that he will send Klitschko to the hospital, and it's going to be a “brutal execution”. However, Klitschko promised to make Haye eat his (famous or infamous?!) t-shirt showing himself holding the Klitschko brothers severed heads, and, that he will knock Haye into reality, which will be good for him. Plus, he'll have better manners! Meanwhile, Haye showed up 45 minutes late to the news conference, which received a “Be on time, princess” comment from Klitschko. There is a light at the end of the tunnel – the fight is this Saturday!

Felix Sturm
Felix Sturm keeps his WBA middleweight title after a split-decision win. 2 judges had 116-112 for Sturm, and the other scored 115-113 in favor of the opponent, Matthew Macklin. This is Sturm's 10th successful defense since his loss and regaining of the title to Javier Castillejo.

Mayweather “Absolutely” Wants to Face Pacquiao. At his press conference, for his September 17th fight with Victor Ortiz, he said that “Floyd doesn't duck or dodge no-one” and also that he never once said that Manny is cheating. Only that he must take the tests.

Robert Guerrero Will Fight Marcos Maidana, Cristobal Arreola Fight, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez?, Really Haye? & More…

Marcos Maidana
Confirmed: Robert Guerrero will indeed fight Marcos Maidana. Guerrero said of the August 27th bout “I think it the biggest one so far and I think it's the most dangerous one so far, too.” Guerrero is super-excited about moving up in weight for this fight. Maidana will train in Puerto Rico, and exclaims that this fight will be a tough one, but that he will win.

Cristobal Arreola will fight again on July 9th, in Atlantic City, N.J. This will be his fourth fight this year, and he fought twice in May! He will contend with Friday Ahunanya.

2 undercard fights canceled... for the 2nd time! Lamont Peterson vs. Victor Cayo – promoter issues.ill possibly be July 5th. Joel “Love Child” Julio vs. Antwone Smith was called off due to a family emergency.

Cristobal Arreola
Bob Arum is ready for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. face Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, provided that Golden Boy is interested in co-promotion. However, Arum states that he doesn't think Canelo's team is ready for it.

Haye belly-aches about the referee choice! Their fight takes place next Saturday, in Germany. Genaro Rodriquez is the un-appreciated referee, with perfectly fine credentials. However, he has officiated for 4 of Klitschko's previous fights... hopefully, this won't be a lame excuse for Haye to pull out, especially after all the tough-guy talking Haye has done.

Grab a punching bag & a set of boxing gloves, and go get some awesome exercise, and have some fun training for your winning style and boxing punches! Find boxing gear here.

Saul Canelo Alvarez Wins! – Beats Rhodes in 12th Round, Meet Unusual Olympic Hopeful Jose Saenz, Michael Katsidis vs. Graham Earl Called Off, Boxing Gear & Boxing Glove, Guillermo Jones Withdraws Due to Back Injury, Discount Punching Bag...

Saul Canelo Alvarez celebrates his victory over Ryan Rhodes
Saul Canelo Alvarez is Victorious! He beat the European champ Ryan Rhodes in the 12th round with a technical knockout, plus, he had won all 11 rounds. They were 48 seconds into the last round when referee Hector Afu stopped the fight. Rhodes either would not, or could not, fight. Rhodes declared that he “probably underestimated his power”, saying that “He's a strong, young kid, he caught me with a lot of body shots... that took a toll on me.” However, he's not finished and he claims he's still number one in Europe. Alvarez's next opponent may be Ricardo Mayorga.

Jose Saenz
Jose Saenz is hoping to compete in Olympic Boxing, however, there is one huge difference about this young man. He has no sponsor, therefore he has to fund himself. Plus, no coach at his home gym, so he has been training himself. On top of all that, he is attending Rockhurst University (accounting major). Hopefully, this young man will “turn some heads”...

Michael Katsidis' fight with Graham Earl has been called off... due to unspecified contractual issues. Instead, he will fight Michael Lozada on August 13th. Katsidis will be moving up to 140 lbs, and he hopes to face Erik Morales after a win over Lozada.

Guillermo Jones sustained a back injury, and has withdrawn from his Saturday title defense. Poor guy has been “living under a rock and giving it my heart and soul for eight weeks, and it's not going to come to fruition.” He was up against Ryan Coyne.

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez Defends Title Tomorrow, Sergio Martinez to Defend his Title on October 1st, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Defamation Case and More Boxing News, Boxing Gear & Boxing Equipment

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez
Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has a big title fight coming up this Saturday, June 18th!  Alvarez has been training for this title defense in Big Bear, California, away from his homeland of Mexican, and the paparazzi.  The fight will take place in Alvarez's hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico, against British boxer Ryan Rhodes.  Big Bear has an altitude of almost 7,000 ft. which took Alvarez 10 - 15 days to get used to.  That's no fun - I've experienced that myself!  No get-up and go just ain't no fun.  Canelo said that a 25-minute run felt like an hour.  However, the boxing training camp change was a success, according to Alvarez's c0-manager and co-trainer, as Alvarez is really confident and focused right now.  The experienced southpaw Rhodes, has worked hard (10 straight wins) to get another shot at a world title.  This could be a very tough fight for Canelo.

Sergio Martinez, on left
Sergio Martinez will defend his middleweight title for the 3rd time on October 1st, against Darren Barker, of England, who is currently undefeated.  Martinez's promoter, Lou DiBella, had some trouble just finding a man that would fight!  He offered the fight to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Daniel Geale (both titleholders) as well as Miguel Cotto, Andy lee and Paul Williams.  One day after agreeing to this fight, Martinez signed a new multi-year, multilmillion-dollar promotional contract with DiBella that will last six fights.

Oh boy... Floyd Mayweather Jr. to testify today in a defamation case filed by Manny Pacquiao.  Apparently Pacquiao isn't happy about Mayweather accusing him of using performance drugs.  Are we surprised?

Sergei Liakhovich
Aftering suffering a rib injury, Sergei Liakhovich will be delayed yet again!  This time, his opponent, Robert Helenius, has postponed the July 16th fight due to inflammation in his right hand.  So... the fight is now scheduled to take place August 27th, in Erfurt, Germany.

Induction to the Boxing Hall of Fame, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. September Defense?, Boxing Training, Boxing Equipment

Julio Cesar Chavez
Kostya Tszyu, Aaron Pryor and Wilfred Benitez are now International Fall-of-Famers.  They were inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York, on Sunday, June 12th.  Also included were Mike Tyson, Sylvester Stallone, Julio Cesar Chavez, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain and Joe Cortez. Memphis Pal Moore, Jack Root, Dave Shade, John Gull, A.F. Bettinson and Harry Carpenter were all inducted posthumously.

Mike Tyson
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. needs to get right back into the action, after his June 4th win, says Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.  Arum is trying to schedule a fight before trainer Freddie Roach leaves for the Phillipines to train with Manny Pacquiao for his Nov. 12th fight.  They have picked Sept. 24th as the desired date, and HBO is considering it.  There are 3 possible opponents for Chavez: Darren Barker, of England, Peter Manfredo Jr., American, and Marco Antonio Rubio, a fellow Mexican.  Arum wants to keep Chavez busy, so after the September title defense fight there will probably be another in December.

Boxing Training - Boxing Defense Moves, Cont.

The Cover-Up - your last opportunity to protect your face or body from an incoming punch.  This is the defense you see when the boxer is only concerned with protecting himself while his opponent punches a few times.  Both fists up high over the face, with the forearms protecting the torso... however, this guard is weak against attacks from below.

Kostya Tszyu
The Clinch - This move is done when the distance between the fighters is close, and is done to prevent hooks and uppercuts.  Loop both hands around the outside of your opponent's shoulders, and then scoop back under their forearms "clinching" their arms to your body.  However, this move is technically against the rules and in amateur boxing you can lose points for using it.

Juan Diaz Gives Up Boxing for Law School, Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquaio?, Robert Guerrero Eyes Junior Welterweight, and more Boxing News, Discount Boxing Gloves & Boxing Gear, Boxing Training - Defensive Boxing Moves...

Juan Diaz pulls out of his July 29th fight - instead will attend law school.  Just 2 weeks after signing a contract to fight David Torres.  Diaz received an acceptance letter from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Law School.  After correspondence with the law school in an effort to wait a year before starting school, which was refused by the school, Diaz has decided to quit boxing.

Two-time junior lightweight champion Genaro Hernandez died on Tuesday.  He was 45.  He had a rare form of cancer, and had battled it for 3 years.  He was surrounded by his family at his home in Mission Viejo, California.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. may fight Pacquiao.  Freddie Roach told The Associated Press that he thinks Mayweather agreed to fight Victor Ortiz because it would help him get ready for a fight with Pacquiao.  Mayweather will be ending a 16-month layoff.  Ortiz and Pacquaio are fast, left handed, high volume punchers.  Mayweather's track record with left-handed opponents, although few, is not too good.

Robert Guerrero
After winning world titles in both featherweight and junior lightweight divisions, Robert Guerrero is looking at a junior welterweight.  The fight is not final yet, but Richard Schaefer is "putting the finishing touches" on this fight.  If it all works out, the fight will be on August 27th, between Guerrero and Marcos Maidana, at the HP Pavilion (Shark Tank) in San Jose, CA.  The winner of this fight may possibly fight the winner of the Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah.

Pacquiao vs. Mosely fight generated over 83 Million. More than 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, along with 15,422 tickets sold at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, make for that big number.  Pacquiao's next fight is schduled for Nov. 12 against Juan Manuel Marquez.

Boxing Training - More Defensive Moves

Bob & Weave - move your head to the side and under that incoming punch.  Bend your legs quickly, while shifting your body either left or right.  After avoiding the punch, stand back up with your head to the left or right of your opponent's outstretched arm.

Parry / Block - use your shoulder, hands or arms to protect against attacks.  A block usually catches a punch while a parry deflects it.  A "palm" or "cuff" intentionally receives a punch on that part of the boxing glove.

Grab some boxing gloves, a partner, some hand wraps and get to practicing.  Find discount boxing gear here.

More Boxing News… Julio Cesar Chavez Emerges Victorious, Flo Simba is Defeated, Boxing Equipment, Richard Hall KO’s O’Neil Bell Quickly, Carl Froch Beats Glen Johnson, Boxing Gear, Boxing Training & More!

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Defeats Sebastian Zbik by decision, winning a middleweight title.  Zbik was dominating early in the fight, but Chavez kept coming forward, landing some body shots and pulled ahead in the end.

Heavyweight Flo Simba, of South Africa, wasn't able to win against Francois Botha last Saturday... it was his first defeat in 11 professional fights.  Simba started well, but Botha landed to big right hands and then a combo in the sixth to win the fight.

Richard Hall, former light-heavyweight contender, KO'd former cruiserweight champ O'Neil Bell in the second round last Saturday night.  Hall put Bell in the corner early on, and gave him a formidable left, followed by 2 more shots, after which the referee stopped the fight 1 minute, 58 seconds into the 2nd round.

Sean McGoldrick
Sean McGoldrick wins Gold Medal.  He was awarded the gold medal after Manju Wanniarachchi, of Sri Lankan, was stripped of it due to positive drugs test. Wanniarachchi tested positive for 19-Norandrosterone. Botswana's Tirafalo Seoko get the silver medal.  Louis Julie retains a bronze.  Kenyan Nichols Okoth will receive the other bronze.

Zsolt Edrei
Zsolt Erdei knocked out Byron Mitchell on Saturday.  Quick hands and accurate punches tore apart Mitchell, ending the fight in the sixth round.  Erdei walked all over Mitchell.  Erdei is hoping for a bout against Bernard Hopkins.

Carl Froch didn't win every round... as he said he would, but he did good enough to keep his super middleweight title and advance to the final of the Super Six W.B.C.  His opponent was Glen Johnson.

Boxing Training - Basic Defense Moves

Slipping - rotate your body just slightly so that punch misses your head.  Sharply roatate your hips and shoulders when the punch comes at you.  This will turn your chin sideways and allow their punch to "slip" past, hence the name.

To "sway" or "fade" is when you move your upper body or head back so that your opponents punch will miss, or be greatly weaker in strength.  You must be able to see the punch before it comes.  Also called "rolling with the punch" or "riding the punch".

Break or Duck; drop down keeping your back straight making the punch miss entirely, or at least glancing off.

Hope you are enjoying the boxing news, and boxing training tips.

Boxing News: Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson, Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah, Punching Bags, Miguel Garcia has a last minute fight change, Micheal Katsidis vs. Graham Earl, Boxing Gear & Boxing Equipment

Amir Khan
Bernard Hopkins to defend his newly won title.  Negotiations began after Chad Dawson's promoter was contacted by Richard Schaefer (Hopkins' promoter), on Wed. May 25th, after Hopkins big win on May 21st.  They are looking for the highest payer to decide where this fight will be held.

Big Fight comming up this summer!  Junior welterweight titles to be unified.  Date: July 23rd... Place: Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas... Fighters: Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah.

Zab Judah
Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia had a last minute change in his schedule this week.  Wednesday, June 1st, he found out that he will not be facing Miguel Beltran Jr.  Instead, he will fight the 10 round battle with Rafael Guzman today, Saturday June 4th.  Miguel suffered a fractured left hand last week, but was just diagnosed recently.  Beltran was to earn 75k.

Slugfest #2... Comming Right Up. Micheal Katsidis and Graham Earl will fight again in August.  The bout will take place at a yet to be determined site in Australia.  Katsidis' last fight with Earl launched him to stardom and since he has lost 2 fights in a row... what better way to get back in the game with another spetacular fight & win against Earl?  Earl has wanted a rematch since the last fight, and now he has it!  Earl is promising a fight worth paying good money for...

Boxing Techniques

Now that we've looke at 4 basic boxing punches we'll take a quick look at combos.  Any of these 4 boxing punches can be used quickly one after the other to form a combo.  A very common combo is the jab and cross combo, nicknamed the "one-two combo".
 .-.-.
Micheal Katsidis
Unconventional Punches
- Refered to as a roundhouse, haymaker or sucker-punch.  This large, swinging circular punch is delivered from a cocked-back position, with your arm at a very long extension.  Body weight and centripetal force can make this often wild and uncontrolled punch powerful, but vulnerable as the boxer is often left off balance & having an open guard.  Trainers regard this punch as a mark of poor technique or desperation.  You might finish off your already reeling opponent with this punch, but be careful!

- The Bolo Punch... swing your arm 'round and 'round in a big arc to distract your opponent, then punch him with either hand.

Boxing News: Tom Zbikowski Back to Football, Will Jack Johnson be Pardoned?, Andre Ward Signs Deals, Pacquaio Trainer Freddie Roach has own Show, Boxing Equip, Joseph Agbeko vs. Abner Mares Aug. 13, Boxing Equipment, Boxing Gear

Tom Zbikowski returns to football… The Baltimore Ravens safety pulled out of his June 4th match against Mike Howell and will be joining his teammates for some informal training. He’s returning to Baltimore to show his teammates he‘s serious about the 2011 season, but wishes he could do both.

Senator John McCain, of Arizona, and Rep. Peter King, of New York are looking for a presidential pardon for Jack Johnson, the heavyweight champion. A similar resolution passed the senate and house of representatives in 2009, but President Obama did not act on it. Generally, they do not act on posthumous pardon requests.

Super middleweight titlist Andre Ward signed a multiyear promotional contract extension. He also re-signed with co-promoter Antonio Leonard and manager James Prince. The deals were finalized around a month ago, but were kept quiet on account that Ward was preparing to defend his 168 pound title against Arthur Abraham. Ward hasn’t lost a fight since he was a 12-year-old amateur!

“On Freddie Roach” – a new six-episode unscripted primetime series to debut in early 2012 on HBO. It’s to focus on Roach and his daily life of working with fighters at his Wild Card Boxing Club, and his fight with Parkinson’s. Says Roach ”I am used to it… They have the keys to my house to get in.” “”It’s going to be my lift at home and mostly everything in the gym leading up to fights… Sometimes it gets overwhelming… I tell them to go home.” The show began filming about 10 days before the May 7th Pacquiao vs. Mosely. Freddie Roach, 51, is a native of Dedham, Massachusetts, was a longtime pro fighter. He recently received his third trainer of the year award – in a row.

Joseph Agbeko cleared for training – fight scheduled for August 13th. He thanked Abner Mares and Showtime for giving him time to recover.

We’ll be getting back to our boxing training in the next post – so check back!

Boxing News: Boxer Bernard Hopkins Victorious, Marquez vs. Pacquiao?, Vikings’ turned Boxer Ray Edwards Wins, MMA Fighter Nick Diaz Withdraws, Quality Boxing Gear, Discount Boxing Equipment, Chad Dawson Defeats Adrian Diaconu… and More!

Bernard Hopkins
Bernard Hopkins is now the oldest fighter to win a major world championship after defeating Jean Pascal… he was 46! The previous oldest winner was George Foreman at 45 years and 10 months. Hopkins (52-5-2) was, to be exact, 46 years, 4 months and 6 days. Jean Pascal is just a youngster, compared to Hopkins, as he’s in his 28th year. Hopkins stripped him of his WBC, IBO and The Ring magazine titles. This fight was actually a rematch, as their Dec. 18th fight was a draw.

Marquez might fight Pacquiao again. Pacquiao hasn’t officially agreed to the fight… more later.

Football player Ray Edwards, of the Minnesota Vikings, won his pro boxing fight. The fight was short and sweet, ending in the 4th round after 2 knock downs. T.J. Gibson was the unlucky opponent. Edwards isn’t the only football player turned boxer. Tom Zbikowski is now 4-0 in his boxing career.

Denis Lebedev knocked out Roy Jones Jr. in Moscow, in the 10th and final round.

Chad Dawson
Chad Dawson defeats Adrian Diaconu. This victory, at the Bell Centre, is pivotal for Dawson… he’s earned a fight with Bernard Hopkins. This is Dawson’s first victory with his new Hall of Fame trainer Emanuel Steward. The taller, longer and quicker Dawson used those attributes to his advantage against Diaconu.

Nick Diaz will not box… According to his manager, Cesar Gracie, the team decided that Diaz’s options in MMA outweigh the attraction of switching over to boxing. If this were a couple months ago, it could have made all the difference. The MMA must be working out for Diaz…

Boxing News… Miranda & Green Returning, Pavlik Victorious, Jorge Arce Beats Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., Boxing Punch – The Uppercut, Boxing Gear & Boxing Equipment

Edison Miranda and Allan Green to return to the title scene. Miranda hasn't fought since April, 2010 when he lost to Lucian Bute in the 3rd round and we don't know yet who he's going to fight in his scheduled 8
Miguel Angel "Mikey" Garcia on right
round battle. Green is to fight an 8-rounder as well, against Dhafir Smith... fights are to take place in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals June 4th, in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Miguel Angel “Mikey” Garcia passes up a world title fight with Billy Dib. Instead, he will be on HBO... deciding that a fight with Dib wouldn't be too enjoyable for fans, even though Mikey would have enjoyed going for that title.

After being out of the ring for 13 months, former middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik has returned to a victory over Alfonso Lopez last Saturday night. Fight took place in Las Vegas, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Pavlik was rusty, but was able to win by a majority decision.

Jorge Arce
Jorge Arce, (57-6-2, 44 knockouts) of Mexico, suffered an early knockdown against Puerto Rico's Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., but came back to win in the 12th round, making Arce a
three-division world titleholder. Vazquez took a beating before Tutico Zabala Jr., one of Vazquez's cornermen and also his
co-promoter, intervened.

The Uppercut

This vertical, rising boxing punch aims for your opponent's chin, and is thrown with your rear hand. Start with your knees slightly bent, rear leg being bent just a bit more that your lead leg. Keeping your elbows in, thrust your rear hand in an upward arc to connect with your opponent's chin, etc. as you push up with your knees for more power. Transfer your weight from your rear foot to your lead foot, use your hips & torso (strong core muscles)... also, your rear heel turns outwards. You want to lift your opponent up – get him off-balance, and / or get his chin up for a good shot! Bury your chin, and guard it with your lead hand. Quickly bring your rear hand back to guard after your uppercut.

Tips:

Rotate your hand

Don't Reach – Stay Close and don't aim too high

Use your upper body – drop your lead shoulder slightly & lean just a little. Don't be too obvious, you want to surprise your opponent.

Find a punching bag, boxing gloves & some hand wraps and get your own knockout uppercut!

Pacquiao Beat Mosley, David Haye / Klitschoko Saga Continues, Elite MMA Fighter vs. Boxer, Boxing News, Boxing Tips, Boxing Punch - The Hook…

Pacquiao easily beat Mosley last Saturday
Pacquiao easily beat “Sugar” Shane Mosley last Saturday... so the good, interesting fight wasn't all that was hoped for. Shane Mosley kept himself from getting knockouted, while Pac-Man's performance wasn't too good, although adequate. Unfortunately, Manny was suffering from a cramp in his leg, which hampered him. Pacquiao took home $20 million, while Mosley isn't suffering with his $5 million.

David Haye has vowed to show to us all that Wladimir Klitschko is a “fraud” in their fight on July 2nd. Klitschko and Haye will be splitting the money 50 / 50 and Klitschko adds that Haye will be getting a really big check... to be the 50th KO! So the saga continues... Haye is still digging that hole & Klitschko isn't going to be happy if there is another cancellation.

MMA Elitist Nick Diaz
Evander Holyfield won in the 10th round last Saturday night, with a TKO. Holyfield stated that it was a tough fight. Nielson disagreed with the TKO decision, and suggested a rematch, which Holyfield declined.

Nick Diaz to possibly box Jeff Lacy this fall. If this match happens, it'll be the first elite mixed martial artist vs. established boxer fight.

Boxer Jeff Lacy
The Boxing Hook

Knock your opponent out with this boxing punch! With your lead head, throw a semi-circular punch to smash into your unfortunate opponent's head. Once again, use that rear hand to guard. Rotate your torso and hips to propel your fist in a tight arc to the target. Also, pivot your lead foot clockwise as well, turning your left heel outwards. Pull that lead had quickly back (important, as you are very vulnerable to a straight righ), and weave / bob to help avoid your opponent's return punch(es). A rip is a boxing hook to the body, instead of the head. The boxing hook can also be performed with the rear hand. Grab your boxing gear & equipment and start utilizing that punching bag!!

Boxing Straight Punch / Cross

This boxing punch is delivered by your rear hand, from the guard position, and utilizes your shoulders. Your lead hand guards your chin. For more power, be sure to incorporate your whole body. Rotating your body, and quickly transferring your body weight give this boxing punch it's power. Be sure to quickly bring your rear hand back to guard yourself. You can counter a jab, counter a straight body punch, or set-up a hook with this punch. Following a jab, this straight boxing punch creates a classic “one-two” combo! Wear your hand wraps and boxing gloves while you perfect your straight punch on your punching bag.

Boxing Technique, Boxing Gear, Boxing Tip… Boxing's Important Jab!

In boxing, there are four basic punches:
  • The Jab
  • Straight Right/Left Hand
  • The Hook
  • The Uppercut
If you are right-handed, your right hand is your rear hand, and your left leads. With left-handed boxers (southpaw) the positions are opposite.

Jab!
The lead fist is thrown straight forward from the guard position, rotating 90 degrees and is horizontal on impact (palm facing the ground). Your rear hand remains behind and is used to guard your jaw. As the punch reaches full extension, you can guard your chin with your lead shoulder. After you punch ‘em, the lead hand is quickly brought back to guard your face. This punch is regarded as your most important punch. It supplies a bit of cover for itself and leaves the smallest amount of space for your opponent to counter punch you. It also has the biggest reach of any punch and doesn’t require big weight transfers or commitment.

Better Protection with Above Eye Level Jab
Because of it’s relatively poor power, it’s often used to gauge distances, test an opponent defense, harass or as a set up for bigger and better punches. However, you can also knockout your opponent with a powerful jab!  With a half-step, you can get more power.  To get a powerful jab, you must use your whole body, not just your arm.
Wladimir Klitschko & Larry Holmes have been able to get some power into their jabs and can use them to wear down their opponents.  Muhammad Ali used the jab extensively.  In fact, a good boxer can win with just the jab!

Tips:
  • When you throw your jab above eye level, you provide nice protection to your head.
  • Start with your fists relaxed, but clench your lead fist just before impact
  • Thrust your shoulder into the jab punch
So, get some boxing gloves, hand wraps, and a punching bag and start practicing your all-important jab!

Vic Darchinyan and Yonnhy Perez's fight was stopped in the 5th round due to a cut close to Perez's eye.  The cut was a result of an accidental head butt and Darchinyan was declared winner, after consulting the scorecards.

Darchinyan (36-3-1, 27 & KO) totally dominated Perez (20-2-1, with 14 Knockouts) and won with 3 matching scorecards of 50-44.  He executed many severe lefts in his remarkable performance.

Dr. Paul Wallace terminated the fight quickly after examining the injury and said that Perez had suffered an arterial cut and that the blood was pumping directly into his eye.  However, Perez apparently did not want to stop.

Now, some Boxing History...

Boxing has it's roots deep in history.  Sumerian relief carvings from the 3rd millennium BC depict bare-fist fighting, while 2nd millennium ancient Egyptian relief show
fist-fighters (also bare-fisted) and spectators.  The earliest evidence of fist fighting with any kind of gloves comes from Minoan Crete and Sardinia.
